Governance
Catholic Healthcare’s governance ensures that the organisation is true to its mission and fulfils the requirements of both canon and civil law. It provides transparency, accountability and good stewardship within the context of our overall ministry.
Catholic Healthcare was established as a public juridical person under the Code of Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church by the Bishops of the Province of Sydney and the Archdiocese of Canberra-Goulburn on 21 July 1994.
Its foundational responsibilities are enshrined in the Statutes of Catholic Healthcare and set out in the norms of canon law.
As at January 2012, the public juridical person comprises the following Members:-
| Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn | Sisters of Mercy, Bathurst |
| Brigidine Sisters, NSW Province | Sisters of Mercy, North Sydney |
| Brothers of St John of God | Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta |
| Diocese of Bathurst | Sisters of Perpetual Adoration |
| Diocese of Lismore | Sisters of St Joseph, NSW Province |
| Diocese of Parramatta | Sisters of St Joesph, Perthville |
| Diocese of Wollongong | Sisters of the Little Company of Mary |
| Maronite Diocese of St Maroun | St Augustine's Parish, Coffs Harbour |
| Our Lady of Dolours Parish, Chatswood | St Thomas Aquinas Parish, Springwood |
Our Members elect our Trustees who are ultimately responsible for our mission.

In addition to their Church responsibilities, the Trustees must also operate in the civil arena. This is facilitated through the Roman Catholic Church Community Lands Act NSW (1942), which gives the Church body clear status, rights and responsibilities at civil law. In this guise and by virtue of the Act, our Trustees are known in the civil arena as ‘Trustees of Catholic Healthcare’, a statutory body corporate.
‘Trustees of Catholic Healthcare’ does not carry on business in its own right. It does so through two operating companies: Catholic Healthcare Limited and Hawkesbury District Health Service Limited.
Catholic Healthcare Limited is a company limited by guarantee. It operates the residential aged care services, retirement communities, community healthcare service and provides the community services within the group. It also operates two healthcare services, St Vincent’s, Bathurst and Lourdes Hospital, Dubbo.
Hawkesbury District Health Service Limited, a company limited by guarantee, operates a 125 bed healthcare facility in Sydney’s North West with extensive community health services.
